This song is not anti-American, it’s anti-waaaaarrrrrrrrr!

Holiday was the third single released from American Idiot and was well-received all around the world. Probably because it rocks super hard.

The Intro

If you’re good at playing octaves/muting, then you should be able to handle this intro, however, they are NOT actually octaves, as some have referred to them elsewhere online. The intro follows the chord pattern Fm, C#, G#, D#, but not all of the notes in those chords are played. As you know, octaves are two versions of the same note, one higher and one lower, being played at the same time. This intro instead uses the root note and the third of each chord (two different notes).

Although we almost never use tablature around here…we will make a rare exception here and illustrate the intro in tab form:

e |——————————————————————–|
B |-9 9-6-6-13-13-8-8-8———————————|
G |——————————————————————–|
D |——————————————————————–|
A |-8 8-4-4-11-11-6-6-6———————————-|
E |——————————————————————–|

That happens four times, then the full chords kick in and run through twice. Then this happens:
