Green Day - Dookie album cover

Release Year: 1994
Label: Reprise/Warner
Producer: Rob Cavallo, Green Day

The album that took three bay area punkers from underground buzz to superstar sensation, Dookie has sold over sixteen million copies worldwide. It also landed in the #199 spot in Rolling Stone’s Top 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2003. Probably should have been a little higher, but we all know that magazine is more or less trapped in the mid 1900s.

Green Day had a budget of $100,000 to get this record made. Exponentially greater than any budget they had ever worked with before. “We’ll probably have enough money left over to pay rent and buy burritos for two years”, said Mike Dirnt while recalling his initial thoughts after receiving the funds to make Dookie, the Green Day’s major label debut.

“We were signing the contract, and I wrote my name, and right next to it, I wrote ‘Did anybody read this?’ ” – Billie Joe on the band’s original signing with Reprise/Warner Bros.
